Top 10 MTB Trails
in Ireland

I'm from Clonmel, Tipperary — so yeah, I take Ireland's trails personally. This is the most honest MTB guide to Ireland you'll find. Every trail on this list is worth your time.

Home Trails Ireland

Ireland doesn't have the Alps. It doesn't have 2,000m descents or cable cars dropping you on top of glaciers. What it does have is some of the gnarliest natural trail building in Europe, legendary bike parks like Rostrevor and Ballyhoura, and a riding community that's quietly becoming one of the most passionate in the world.

I grew up riding the trails around Clonmel and Tipperary. I've ridden most of the trails on this list. davidmtb rates Ireland's scene as genuinely world-class for what it is — technical forest trails, exposed mountain riding, and a few purpose-built gems that would be famous anywhere else in the world.

These are the top 20 MTB trails in Ireland, ranked by davidmtb. Whether you're planning a trip from abroad or just want to know what's worth travelling for in your own country, this is your list.

"Ireland doesn't do easy trails. The ground is wet, the roots are slippery, and the climbs are relentless. That's exactly what makes it brilliant."

Ballyhoura Mountain Trails Ireland
Red · Difficult Black · Severe

#1 — Ballyhoura Mountain Trails

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Ardpatrick, Co. Limerick📏 95km network⬇️ 450m drop

The biggest trail centre in Ireland. 95 kilometres of purpose-built singletrack spread across the Ballyhoura Mountains on the Limerick/Cork border. The red trails are genuinely tough — long, rooty climbs with technical descents through dense forest. The black Spook the Horses trail is everything you'd want: fast, punchy, with enough exposure to keep you honest.

If you ride one trail centre in Ireland, make it this one. The scale is unmatched, the trail quality is excellent, and there's enough variety for a full weekend of riding without repeating yourself.

Rostrevor Forest Mountain Biking
Red · Enduro Black · DH

#2 — Rostrevor Forest Park

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Rostrevor, Co. Down📏 Multiple trails⬇️ 480m drop

Rostrevor is in a different league. The Fairy Glen trail is one of the most celebrated pieces of singletrack in Ireland — tight, twisty, root-strewn, and completely addictive. The Bandit DH track climbs up to 480m before unleashing you down a full-on downhill run that would hold its own in Wales or Scotland. This is serious riding.

The forest itself is dark, ancient, and atmospheric. Riding here on a misty morning with the Mourne Mountains behind you is an experience. davidmtb rates Rostrevor as one of the genuinely special places to ride in Ireland — not just good for Ireland, but properly good.

The Gap Bike Park Wicklow
Red · DH/Jump ⚫⚫ Double Black

#3 — The Gap Bike Park

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Laragh, Co. Wicklow📏 6 tracks⬇️ 350m drop

The Gap is a proper bike park — the kind of place where the regulars are throwing bikes at scary stuff before 9am and the atmosphere is electric. Six purpose-built downhill and jump tracks including some of the most technical riding in the Republic of Ireland. From the flow tracks for building speed to the full-on black runs for pushing limits.

I've ridden The Gap a lot. It's the kind of place that improves you as a rider faster than anywhere else — the consequences keep you focused and the lines reward commitment. Read the full davidmtb review of The Gap Bike Park →

Kilbroney Forest Park MTB
Blue · XC Red · Enduro

#4 — Kilbroney Forest Park

★★★★☆
📍 Rostrevor, Co. Down📏 20km trails⬇️ 300m drop

Right next to Rostrevor and well worth combining for a full weekend. Kilbroney offers slightly more accessible trails than the extreme end of its neighbour — the blue and red trails flow beautifully through mature forest with views across Carlingford Lough. A perfect warm-up before tackling Rostrevor's heavier hitters.

Ticknock Dublin Mountains MTB
Blue · XC Red · Technical

#5 — Ticknock Forest

★★★★☆
📍 Dublin Mountains📏 15km trails⬇️ 250m drop

The Dublin rider's local. Ticknock sits in the Dublin Mountains with the city spread out below you and is the starting point for thousands of Irish riders. The trails are solid — a mix of fireroad, natural singletrack and purpose-built red trails. Particularly good for an after-work rip when you can't justify a longer drive.

Castlewellan Forest Park MTB
Green · Beginner Blue · Intermediate Red · Advanced

#6 — Castlewellan Forest Park

★★★★☆
📍 Castlewellan, Co. Down📏 25km trails⬇️ 200m drop

One of the best all-round trail centres in Ireland for families and mixed-ability groups. Castlewellan has beautifully maintained trails from green beginners' loops right up to challenging red singletrack. The arboretum setting makes it one of the most scenic rides on the island. Good facilities, good trails, great for introducing new riders to the sport.

Djouce Mountain Wicklow MTB
Red · XC

#7 — Djouce Mountain, Wicklow

★★★★☆
📍 Wicklow Mountains📏 Natural trails⬇️ 400m drop

Djouce is what mountain biking looked like before bike parks existed — raw, exposed, and completely natural. The trails up and over the summit are rocky, boggy in winter, and absolutely breathtaking on a clear day. The descent back into the valley is the kind of thing you'd ride six times if your legs could handle the climb. This is proper mountain riding.

Ballinastoe Wicklow MTB
Blue · Flow Red · Technical

#8 — Ballinastoe, Wicklow

★★★★☆
📍 Roundwood, Co. Wicklow📏 16km trails⬇️ 280m drop

Coillte's well-maintained trail centre in the heart of Wicklow. Ballinastoe is consistent and well-built — the blue trail is a genuine flow trail with bermed corners and regular maintenance, while the red adds technical features and exposure. Great for an improving rider who wants reliable, quality singletrack in a beautiful forest setting.

Blessingbourne Fermanagh MTB
Blue · XC Red · Enduro

#9 — Blessingbourne, Fermanagh

★★★★☆
📍 Fivemiletown, Co. Fermanagh📏 30km trails⬇️ 250m drop

Blessingbourne is a hidden gem. The trail network runs through the grounds of Blessingbourne Estate with a mix of forest, open hillside, and agricultural land — giving it a unique character compared to your typical plantation forest trail. The enduro sections are genuinely good, and the estate accommodation makes it a perfect overnight trip.

Carlingford MTB Louth
Blue · XC Red · Enduro

#10 — Carlingford MTB Trail

★★★☆☆
📍 Carlingford, Co. Louth📏 Slieve Foy loop⬇️ 550m drop

The Slieve Foy descent into Carlingford is one of Ireland's great mountain bike experiences — 550m of elevation drop down the side of a mountain with the sea glittering below you. It's not the most purpose-built trail in Ireland, but the raw character and the views make it exceptional. Best ridden after some rain when the trails firm up.

davidmtb Pro Tip — Planning an Ireland MTB Trip

Ireland's weather is unpredictable year-round. Pack full waterproofs regardless of the forecast. The best riding is often just after rain when surfaces firm up and the forest smells incredible. June–September is your safest bet for dry days, but don't write off a wet ride — sometimes the moodiest conditions produce the best memories.
