HomeTrails › Switzerland

Switzerland is not a budget MTB destination. Everything costs more — the lifts, the accommodation, the food. But here's the thing: you get what you pay for, and what Switzerland offers is riding that genuinely exists nowhere else on earth. The combination of the highest Alps, world-class lift infrastructure, exceptional trail maintenance, and a culture that takes mountain sports seriously produces an MTB experience that is simply on another level.

From the volcanic lunar landscape of Verbier's upper trails to the Matterhorn-backed descent at Zermatt, from the purpose-built DH playground at Laax to the World Cup XC circuits at Lenzerheide — Switzerland covers every discipline and every ambition. davidmtb's Top 20 Switzerland MTB trails is your planning guide.

"Riding in Switzerland feels like riding on a screensaver. Except the trail is real and it's trying to kill you in the best possible way."

Verbier Bike Park Switzerland

#1 — Verbier Bike Park

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Verbier, Valais📏 60km trails⬇️ 2,200m drop

The king of Swiss bike parks. Verbier's 4 Vallées cable car network carries you to over 3,000m above sea level, and from there you descend through everything from glacial scree to technical forest. The 2,200m of potential vertical is mind-blowing — you can build an all-day descent that no shuttle service in the world could replicate. The Verbier Bike Park has developed excellent sanctioned trails alongside the natural terrain, making it accessible while preserving the genuine mountain experience. This is a bucket-list destination for every serious rider.

Zermatt MTB Switzerland Matterhorn

#2 — Zermatt MTB Trails

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Zermatt, Valais📏 40km trails⬇️ 1,800m drop

You ride to 3,883m on the Rothorn cable car, turn your bike down the mountain, and in the background the Matterhorn towers at 4,478m. There is literally nowhere else in the world where you can ride a mountain bike with that view. The trails themselves are excellent — well-maintained singletrack descending through extraordinary alpine scenery from glacial upper reaches through forest and meadow to the car-free town below. Zermatt is simultaneously the most dramatic and most refined MTB experience in Switzerland.

Laax Bikepark Switzerland Graubünden

#3 — Laax Bikepark, Graubünden

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Laax, Graubünden📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,400m drop

Laax is the hipster cousin to Verbier — a progressive, well-designed bike park that sets the standard for how these things should be done. The LAAX Resort is famous for its snowboarding culture and that progressive attitude carries directly into the bike park. Excellent trail design, well-thought-out progression from beginner to expert, and a resort vibe that's welcoming rather than intimidating. The Crap Sogn Gion summit provides a dramatic launch pad for trails that cover every style of riding the mountain offers.

Davos MTB Switzerland

#4 — Davos Mountain Biking

★★★★★
📍 Davos, Graubünden📏 60km trails⬇️ 1,200m drop

Europe's highest city gives you some of Europe's most impressive mountain biking. Davos at 1,560m is the starting point for an extraordinary network of trails that climb into the Davos-Klosters region — one of Switzerland's most beautiful alpine landscapes. The combination of high-altitude XC riding, dedicated enduro descents, and lift-accessed DH terrain means you can spend a full week here without running out of new lines. The Parsenn cable car opens trails that genuinely feel like you've left the normal world behind.

Lenzerheide MTB World Cup Switzerland

#5 — Lenzerheide, Graubünden

davidmtb Pick
★★★★★
📍 Lenzerheide, Graubünden📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,000m drop

Lenzerheide hosts the annual UCI MTB World Cup XC event on a course that is considered one of the most technically demanding in the circuit. The same trails are available for the public during the rest of the season, and the surrounding trail network extends into serious enduro territory. For XC riders especially, riding the World Cup course in Lenzerheide is a genuine experience — you feel fast, then you see the race footage and realise you're not. Either way, it's brilliant.

Crans-Montana MTB Switzerland
RedBlack

#6 — Crans-Montana

★★★★☆
📍 Crans-Montana, Valais📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,500m drop

The chic Valais resort famous for its Ryder Cup golf course and its clientele of wealthy Europeans is also, quietly, one of Switzerland's better MTB destinations. The Plaine Morte glacier provides a dramatic backdrop for trails that descend through extraordinary alpine scenery. The DH course used for Enduro World Series events is technical and demanding, while the wider trail network offers excellent variety at all levels. The resort facilities are first-class — expect to pay accordingly.

Grindelwald MTB Eiger Switzerland
BlueRedBlack

#7 — Grindelwald, Berner Oberland

★★★★☆
📍 Grindelwald, Berner Oberland📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,600m drop

Grindelwald is one of the most spectacular settings in all of Switzerland — beneath the iconic north face of the Eiger and surrounded by the Jungfrau massif. The MTB trails here descend from the First mountain station through a combination of purpose-built singletrack and natural alpine paths. The First Flyer — a zipline from the First summit — gives you a non-biking perspective on just how dramatic the terrain is. Riding here is an unforgettable experience regardless of ability level.

Engelberg MTB Switzerland
RedBlack

#8 — Engelberg

★★★★☆
📍 Engelberg, Nidwalden📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,800m drop

Engelberg — "Angel Mountain" — is one of Switzerland's most dramatic resorts. The Titlis glacier cable car lifts you to 3,020m and from there the descents are extraordinary. The trail network combines lift-accessed DH runs with alpine touring trails that wind through meadows, cliffs, and dense forest. The monastery town at the valley floor adds an almost medieval atmosphere to the whole experience. One of Switzerland's most complete MTB destinations.

Champéry Portes du Soleil MTB Switzerland
RedBlack

#9 — Champéry, Portes du Soleil

★★★★★
📍 Champéry, Valais📏 Mega-resort trails⬇️ 1,400m drop

Champéry is the Swiss gateway to the Portes du Soleil — the cross-border French-Swiss mega-resort that spans Les Gets, Morzine, Châtel, Avoriaz, and a dozen other resorts. From Champéry you can access hundreds of kilometres of trails on both sides of the border. The Swiss side has a distinct character from the French — slightly rougher, more natural, with longer traverses between the lift-accessed sections. An absolute must for anyone serious about enduro riding.

Saas-Fee MTB Switzerland glacier
RedBlack

#10 — Saas-Fee, Valais

★★★★☆
📍 Saas-Fee, Valais📏 Various trails⬇️ 1,500m drop

Saas-Fee is car-free, glacier-surrounded, and genuinely breathtaking. The village sits in a natural amphitheatre of 4,000m peaks and the MTB trails descend from the Hannig and Spielboden gondola stations through dramatic moraine and forest terrain. The riding here is more natural and touring-oriented than the purpose-built bike parks — you follow trails that were walked by shepherds for centuries, now ridden by people who appreciate wild things. A truly special place.

davidmtb Pro Tip — Switzerland Budget Tips

Switzerland is expensive, but you can manage costs smartly. Geneva or Zürich flights are often cheaper than direct access to resort areas. Swiss Half-Fare travel cards give 50% off public transport including mountain railways. Bring food from supermarkets (Migros and Coop are excellent and significantly cheaper than resort restaurants). Early booking for July–August accommodation is essential — Swiss resorts fill completely. The riding, when you get there, is worth every penny.
