Cross-country (XC)
The original MTB discipline. Long climbs, long descents, a lot of pedalling. Courses at World Cup level are typically 4–6 km loops with short, punchy climbs and technical descents; marathon XC events run 60–160 km.
Bike: 100–120 mm of travel front and rear, 29" wheels, ~10–12 kg, steep-ish head angle (67–68°), one-piece carbon cockpit if the budget is there. Tyres are fast-rolling, 2.2"–2.4". Many racers run a dropper post now but it wasn't standard a decade ago.
Kit: half-shell helmet, clipless shoes, lycra or loose race kit, light gloves, bottle on the frame for short courses or a small race pack for marathon.
Races: UCI World Cup XCO, World Championships, Cape Epic, Leadville 100, BC Bike Race. Olympic discipline.
Suits: the rider who wants the engine work as much as the descending. Endurance brain, suffer-tolerant, doesn't need a 2-metre gap to feel alive.
Trail
The middle of the bell curve and what most adults actually ride. Wide enough to handle UK red and most European blue/red trail centres, climbs under its own power, descends well without being a downhill bike.
Bike: 130–150 mm of travel, 29" or mullet (29F/27.5R), 13–14 kg, head angle 65–66°, dropper post mandatory, tyres around 2.4–2.5" with some bite.
Kit: half-shell helmet (MIPS or equivalent), knee pads on rougher days, flat or clipless shoes, baggies, pack or hip-pack.
Races: trail isn't really raced as a category — most "trail" racers cross over into enduro events.
Suits: almost everyone who isn't racing. If you don't know which discipline you are, you are this one.
All-mountain
An older term overlapping with the harder end of trail and the lighter end of enduro. You'll still see bikes badged "AM" — think 140–160 mm travel, slightly burlier than trail, designed to handle technical alpine days where you might be on the bike for six hours but only "racing" yourself.
If a rider says "all-mountain" today, what they usually mean is "I want one bike that pedals fine and descends like an enduro bike". The category has been mostly swallowed by trail and enduro, but the bikes are still made.
Enduro
Race format invented in the Alps and now the second-biggest race category after XC. You climb (untimed) between timed downhill stages — typically 4–6 stages per day, 30–90 seconds to 8 minutes each, ridden flat-out on demanding descents.
Bike: 160–180 mm travel front and rear, mullet or 29", 14–16 kg, very slack head angle (63–64°), long reach, coil or air shock, four-piston brakes with 200/203 mm rotors, full-volume DH-casing tyres.
Kit: MIPS half-shell helmet (some run convertible chinbars), knee pads always, sometimes elbow pads, full-finger gloves, neck brace optional. Camelbak or hydration vest.
Races: Enduro World Series (EWS) — now part of the UCI Enduro World Cup, EWS-Continental, national series. Locally: Vitus First Tracks Cup (Ireland), Welsh Enduro Series, BES (Scotland), Big Mountain Enduro (US).
Suits: the rider who likes long, technical descents, has the fitness to climb to them, and likes the buzz of a clock without the dedication of a pure downhiller.
Downhill (DH)
One discipline, one goal: get from top to bottom faster than anyone else, gravity-assisted, no pedalling between gates. Tracks are 1.5–3.5 km long, 90 seconds to 5 minutes of riding time, with drops, rock gardens, jumps and braking bumps that punish anything less than a dedicated DH bike.
Bike: 200–215 mm of travel front and rear, dual-crown 200 mm fork, coil shock, 7-speed cassette, single chainring with chainguide, 14.5–17 kg. Designed to be uplifted, not pedalled up.
Kit: full-face helmet (with MIPS or equivalent rotational protection), goggles, neck brace, full body armour or pressure suit, knee + elbow pads, full-finger gloves, lace-up clipless or flat shoes.
Races: UCI Downhill World Cup, World Championships, Crankworx, Hardline (invite-only). National series in IE/UK/FR/IT/CA/US.
Suits: rider who lives for the adrenaline of speed and would rather skip the climb. Needs access to uplift, a bike park, or a friend with a van.
Freeride
The discipline that gave the sport its hero shots. Big mountain lines on natural terrain, big drops, big airs, no clock — judged on style and difficulty when there is a contest at all.
Bike: Park-and-freeride bikes overlap with DH (170–200 mm travel) but are usually slightly shorter, more playful, with single crowns rather than duals. Some riders run a slopestyle or dirt-jump hardtail for hits.
Events: Red Bull Rampage, Audi Nines, Hardline, Joyride. Most freeride happens in film projects, not competitions.
Suits: the rider with high air confidence, a deep understanding of body position, and access to terrain. Not a beginner discipline.
Dirt jump (DJ)
Hardtail with 100 mm of fork travel, one gear, rear coaster or single rear brake, designed to be thrown around on jump lines. A discipline in its own right at parks like NASS, Joyride, FISE and in the BMX-adjacent jam scene.
Bike: 26" wheels (still standard here), rigid steel or alloy frame, low BB, slack-ish head angle, very short stem, riser bar.
Kit: half-shell or full-face, knee pads, gloves. Shoes are flat — clipless is rare in DJ.
Suits: riders who want to build bike-handling, learn tricks, and ride for an hour after school without needing a van and a Munster mountain.
Bike park / Slopestyle
Slopestyle is the contest format you see at Crankworx Joyride and Red Bull Joyride — purpose-built jump and feature courses where riders are judged on the tricks they throw between hits.
"Bike park" as a broader term covers any uplift-served downhill venue, from BPI in Ireland to Bikepark Wales, Morzine, Whistler. The bike depends on what you ride there — most weekend bike-park riders show up on an enduro bike, hard DH days demand a DH bike.
Bikepacking
The MTB-flavour of bicycle touring. You take a trail or hardtail bike, load it with frame bags, seat-pack and bar-roll, and ride multi-day routes off-road — gravel, doubletrack, singletrack and the occasional hike-a-bike.
Bike: rigid or short-travel hardtail with 29" or 27.5+ wheels, mounts everywhere for cages and racks, comfortable geometry rather than aggressive.
Routes: the Highland Trail 550 (Scotland), Tour Divide (Canada–Mexico), TransAlp routes, Atlas Mountain Race, Bear Bones 200 (Wales).
Suits: rider who likes time on the bike more than time in the air. Self-sufficient, doesn't mind sleeping out.
