Tipperary town is the closest base to the north side of the Galtee Mountains. From here you can drop into the Glen of Aherlow in 15 minutes — the long valley between the Galtees and Slievenamuck — and access the northern Coillte forest network for big-day rides.
The Glen of Aherlow is genuinely scenic — wide, open valley with mountains rising on both sides. For mountain biking, the south side (Galtee approaches) gives you steeper, more committed rides; the north side (Slievenamuck) is gentler and family-friendly. Multiple Coillte entries off the R663 and R664.
Slievenamuck itself is a long rolling ridge running parallel to the Galtees. The forest network on its south slopes is well-developed and rideable year-round. Good for shorter sessions if you don't want a full Galtees committed day.
Tipperary town has the usual accommodation, food and bike-shop options for the wider county. Not a tourism hotspot like Cashel but a working town with everything you need for an MTB trip.
