Mountain Biking in Mitchelstown

Galtees south-west base — closest town to Galtymore.

Mitchelstown · Co. Cork · 50 minutes west of Clonmel

Mitchelstown sits at the south-west corner of the Galtee Mountains. For mountain biking, Mitchelstown is the closest town to Galtymore (Ireland's highest inland peak at 919m) and the obvious base for big-day Galtee rides from the south side.

The southern Galtee approaches from Mitchelstown are steep — long fire-road climbs through the Coillte forest network up to the open mountain. In good weather and for fit, confident riders, you can ride sections of the Galtee ridge between peaks. Most riders stick to the forest network unless they're chasing summits.

West of Mitchelstown the Ballyhoura trail centre is 40 minutes. East via the Vee Pass takes you into the Knockmealdowns. A long weekend from a Mitchelstown base can comfortably cover the Galtees (day 1), Ballyhoura (day 2), and Knockmealdowns (day 3) — three completely different riding experiences.

Mitchelstown caves are nearby — a tourist attraction not directly MTB-related but worth knowing for rest-day plans.
