Mountain Biking in Fermoy

North-Cork base — Galtees north-east, Ballyhoura west, Knockmealdowns east.

Fermoy · Co. Cork · 50 minutes south-west of Clonmel

Fermoy sits in north Cork on the Blackwater valley. For mountain biking, Fermoy is geographically lucky: three serious mountain regions are within an hour. Galtees 40 minutes north-east, Knockmealdowns 35 minutes east through Lismore, and the Ballyhoura mountain bike trail network 45 minutes west.

Ballyhoura is Ireland's largest purpose-built MTB trail centre — 98km of waymarked singletrack across multiple grades. For a Fermoy-based rider, Ballyhoura is the obvious go-to: a full day's riding, marked trails, no navigation guesswork. Map and shower facilities at the trail head.

The Knockmealdowns are quieter and natural rather than purpose-built. Long fire-road climbs and descents through pine. Different riding to Ballyhoura's flow trails — more committed and weather-dependent.

Fermoy is a working town with everything you need — supermarkets, bike-shop services, food, accommodation. The Blackwater Way (a national walking route) passes through and gives you ideas for ride extensions if you want to push beyond the trail centres.
