Cahir is one of the best-positioned towns in Tipperary for mountain biking. The N24 connects you to Clonmel in 15 minutes east, the Galtees rise to the north-west, and the Knockmealdowns are 20 minutes south through Clogheen. Three mountain ranges within reach from one town.
The closest serious riding to Cahir is the Galtee Mountains via the southern Coillte forest network. Long fire-road climbs, exposed ridge sections in good weather, and a route up toward Galtymore (Ireland's tallest inland peak at 919m) for the fit. The Glen of Aherlow on the north side is gentler — valley-floor forest tracks for shorter rides.
South of Cahir, the road over the Vee Pass takes you into the Knockmealdowns. Quieter than the Comeraghs and rideable year-round on the lower forest network. Allow 25 minutes by car to the main Vee entry points.
For a quick local lap, Glengarra Wood (5 minutes east of Cahir on the N8) is a small Coillte forest with marked walking tracks that ride well for shorter sessions.
