Trails, jumps, gear and the Clonmel MTB scene — all on Instagram
@d.emtb on Instagram → Browse All Trails →I started mountain biking when I was young and it's become one of the biggest parts of my life. If you're just getting into MTB in Ireland, here's what I wish someone had told me earlier.
Don't buy cheap. A €200 bike from a supermarket will frustrate you and potentially break at a bad time. Save up for a quality hardtail from a proper bike brand. €600-€800 gets you something that'll last years and actually feels good to ride.
Start on easy trails. Confidence builds fast on easy terrain. The Suir Valley Greenway is where I take any beginner friend. Get your braking, balance and gear changes dialled before heading to the technical stuff.
| Skill | Why It Matters | How to Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Braking technique | Controls speed, prevents stacking | Practice on flat, brake progressively |
| Looking ahead | Spot obstacles before you hit them | Force yourself to look 5m ahead |
| Body position | Stable over rough terrain | Slightly bent elbows/knees, weight back on descents |
| Gear selection | Don't run out of momentum | Anticipate climbs, shift before you need to |
Ride as much as possible. Even 20 minutes on local trails after school makes a difference. Follow other riders on Instagram and YouTube to learn techniques. Don't rush the scary stuff — build up gradually and it'll feel natural when you're ready.
